Raising a garden in raised beds can be an enjoyable experience for you and your family. It offers many benefits for both you and your garden that might not be seen otherwise. Using raised beds is very similar to growing plants in larger containers. The only difference is that the planting area is elevated above the natural soil surface and typically enclosed in a frame to form a raised planting bed.

Traditional Gardening Technique Vs. Raised Bed Gardening

Raised beds provide many benefits for gardeners. Traditional garden gardening can take a toll on backs and knees, while gardening in raised beds can help save the muscles (in the back and legs) you are more familiar with. You will have much less labor when you have the advantage of complete access to the natural soils from which your garden is grown. Furthermore, there is less water wastage when using these gardens, sawdust, and even broken glass ( Figure 1). All of these can be avoided by using galvanized metal wire around your raised beds. Galvanized metal is non-toxic and extremely resistant to cuts made by animals, children, or other gardeners.

Many chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides can cause serious health problems if used accidentally during gardening in raised beds. Some use wrought iron beds. Make sure that they are covered completely and not just their tops. This will help in preventing rust.

A raised garden spot is easier to maintain. You won’t have to worry about disturbing the neighbors when you need to clean up. There won’t be any grass clippings or leftover food particles lying around and no animals or kids going in your garden spot. Also, if any food leftovers are lying around, they can be easily taken care of by a rake.

Benefit of Solarization

Solarization is very helpful in increasing the productivity and quality of the soil. It is not only beneficial for plants; it is also good for the garden spot. When there is enough light, plants can grow at a faster rate. When this happens, you get to harvest more fresh produce and have them fresher for longer. This makes gardening in raised beds even more enjoyable.

With all these benefits that raised bed gardening offers, one thing cannot be overlooked. That is the ease and comfort that this type of gardening can bring into your life. With a simple set of tools and a little effort, you can easily have a garden that looks like a fairy tale scene. With solarization and a little know-how, you can install your solar-powered lights and have your fairy tale garden. In a nutshell, there is a lot to learn with this type of gardening but, what you do know can bring a new perspective to your family and friends.
