Potting soil mix requires some water absorbing materials. People call it in the name of hydrogels or hydrophilic polymers. You can make it with polymers like crystal. It allows them to save the dampness when you mix them potting soil. Initially, the polymers will look like salt when they are dry. But they blow up into a jelly-like bundle when they absorb water. The polymer bundles gather dampness just like a sponge. They do it in such a way that as and when the roots of the plants are dry, water can be made available to them. When water-absorbing crystals are added to the plants, the nursery owners can save their time by frequently watering the plants. They can also reduce the stress of their plants losing dampness during the scorching climate. Now, let us understand how they can be used for the potting of soil.
Fill Up Crystals To Potting Soil
As a first step, the absorbing crystals should be thoroughly mixed with the potting soil when the nursery worker is filling up a planter during the process of preparing for the addition of plants. It is better to ensure that the crystals are distributed evenly throughout the farmer, and this process can be done irrespective of whether the soil is wet or dry; however, it can be easily done when the land is dry as compared to moist soil. Here, it is essential to follow the directions given by the manufacturer when adding water hydrogels to the potting soil. The user should be careful since too much of polymer material should not be used as it might push the plant out of the planter.
The watering of the planter should be done as usual. The water-absorbing material used will enable the plants to need lesser water as compared to the standard requirement. But it cannot entirely eliminate the need for watering. Here, it is better to feed the planter by releasing the fertilizers slowly since hydrogels break down at a faster pace when opened to fertilizer salts.
It would help if you were careful about this process because this is very much important for the planting. In case you add less amount of water, then there is a high chance of the plant’s death. The same thing is applicable in the case of excessive water as well. This thing can rot the roots of your indoor plants. But if you add water-absorbing materials to the potting soil, then you can be free of worries. But make sure that you are not putting unlimited water as these materials also have their capacity to absorb.
The user should remember that the absorbent material should be replaced at regular intervals since their consequence on potting soil is temporary only. This is because, as a result of natural decomposition, the ability of hydrogels’ to attract water will reduce within five years, and this is quite natural. When purchasing the potting mix, it should be ensured that it does not already have water-absorbent material.
